Every boat owner knows the general rule: service your engine every 100 hours or once a year. But salt water, humidity, and sitting idle over winter can cause hidden mechanical issues long before your regular annual service is due.
Here are three clear warning signs that your engine needs immediate diagnostic attention:
1. A Sudden Drop in Top-End RPM or Plane Speed: If your boat takes longer to get onto the plane or feels sluggish at full throttle, you could be facing fuel contamination, fouled spark plugs, or a failing ignition coil. Ignoring this puts extra strain on your engine block.
2. The Engine "Pee Stream" (Tell-Tale) Is Weak or Warm: Your outboard’s water pump relies on a flexible rubber impeller. Over time, salt residue and heat stiffen these blades. A weak cooling stream is an early warning that your engine is on the verge of overheating.
3. Milkiness in Your Gearbox Oil: When checking your lower unit oil, it should be clear and dark. If it looks milky or creamy, salt water has penetrated your prop shaft or drive shaft seals. Replacing a seal now costs a fraction of replacing a seized lower unit.
